Scout’s Surgery Day

Hey Guys,
Scout got his surgery finished last night at around midnight. It took them a total of about four and a half hours. They said it was the longest amputation that the vet has ever had to do. Scout’s took so long though because where the car had hit his leg it was very jagged and rough, causing new veins to be cut everyday by his bone, which is also the main cause that the morphine wasn’t working very good either, anyway, they had to cut his leg very slowly and cauterize the veins as they went so he wouldn’t bleed to death. The vet ended up calling a specialist to see if he recommended waiting a few days to see if the swelling would go down or if he would have lost too much blood by then. The vet operated that night and Scout was doing worlds better in the morning. I have only got to see him once since then, but he walked, which is huge because he wouldn’t even move his head when the leg was still on. I would appreciate any ideas/tips on when I bring him home tomorrow that I don’t already know.
Have a great day!

Congratulations on a successful surgery. It sounds like your vet is very competent and honest if he was willing to call a specialist to verify.
Get as much sleep as possible before Scout comes home. Even if he does great, you will still be paranoid and wake up every time he moves. Don’t be surprised if he does great the first day or two at home and then regresses for a day or two. That seems to be common for a lot of the dogs on this site.
If you have any hardwoods/tile, try to cover with runners or rugs. Personally, I have found that the bathroom throw rugs work great. We already had those runners that Home Depot has on rolls and will cut to size. Zeus did fine on those with four legs, but the pile is really short on those and his three-leg hop causes him to slip a bit.
Good luck with the recovery! Keep us updated.
Hey Scout , we’re glad you made it through surgery!
My biggest advice is to check out our Required Reading List and our ebook, they are filled with tips about bringing home baby. And of course talk to our other Tripawds family members, everyone has such great advice about what to do to help make recovery easier.
Hope you’re feeling better today!
